The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is actively investigating a high-profile corruption scandal implicating Hon. Reagan Kanini, a member of the Senate, and Mr. Andrew Michaels, a prominent government official, alongside a Chinese company.

The scandal revolves around the awarding of a significant tender to the Chinese firm, which was declared unconstitutional due to a lack of adherence to due process. Shockingly, an astounding USD 200 million (Ksh 29 billion) in mobilization funds were transferred to the Chinese company’s Hong Kong-based account. Investigators have uncovered evidence of kickbacks originating from the same account, leading to a Kenyan account associated with the implicated government officials, totaling USD 15 million (Ksh 2.2 billion).

EACC, with a mandate to combat corruption, has taken swift action to investigate this matter thoroughly. It is crucial to emphasize that the law will be rigorously upheld throughout this investigation to combat corruption within the tendering process.

This development comes amidst ongoing investigations by EACC involving 21 current and former governors over allegations of corruption and economic crimes, which have resulted in the misappropriation of substantial public funds. These investigations encompass a wide range of offenses, including embezzlement of public funds, conflicts of interest, procurement fraud, payroll irregularities, fraudulent pending bills, and the blatant disregard of financial management laws. The EACC remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring transparency in government affairs.
